Are system bus speeds comparable when comparing different chipsets and processors? For example, when comparing AMD and Pentium processors, the AMD may have clock rate of 2.2 GHz whereas the Pentium may have a clock rate of 3.0 GHz. However, because the AMD is more efficient per clock cycle, the two can't really be compared just by their speed. I'm wondering if the same holds true with front-side buses (system buses)? If the Pentium has a bus speed of 800 MHz and the AMD has a bus speed of 400 MHz, does that mean that the Pentium's bus is twice as fast, or do the two processors utilize the bus in different ways, making it an inaccurate comparison?

The LDT Bus on AMD and Intel are not at all the same but the performance between the two are somewhat comparable.

Thanks. So do you think an AMD Athlon XP 3200+ with a 400 MHz bus is comparable to a Pentium4 3.0 GHz with an 800 MHz bus?

I think you could compair it but probably Intel will have an edge on XP chip. You should buy a 64bit CPU rather than XP, in performance wise it is much better..
