Start up taking a long time

i have a comptuer useing windows xp. and on start up the screen that says "windows is starting up" before u get to the desktop. well it will can be there for 5 mins sometimes. and all my other comptuer its there for like 2 sec. taking any suggestions!

Could be a hdd failing. Have you tried reformating? That is always a great fix :D
 
another suggestion..

go into msconfig Start>Run type msconfig and hit enter

then go to the startup tab... you may have a lot of unneccesary stuff loading at startup... like real player, winzip quick picks, etc... you can uncheck the ones you dont want to start with windows and this should reduce your startup time.
 
O ya boot.ini also. Is there anything else that could cause a slow start up? All i can think of is start-up apps, boot.ini, unused drivers, and bad hard drive.
 
yea windows used to take forever to load for me too.. even the bars that move from left to right moved slow. after i added some ram, it went much faster. if you have 512 or higher ram, then ram is not you problem... do what the other guys said..hehe
