Well it looks like it may have been a power spike which effected the PSU, SATA drive, main CPU and DVD writer!! (and my 5950U if I'm really unlucky, can't test without the big psu)
Not the best of situations but at least I'm running the collection of spare parts I was using for testing, dropped a gig of CPU speed, 512MB ram and GFX card but at east I have a machine

Oh, I got a reply from Gigabyte over a week after posting the issue and for your delight here it is

Well what kind of PSU's were these, if your trying some crap 250watt PSU yes your computer will reboot like this

The primary PSU was a 550, the backup a 400W
