Im having trouble with modem initialization

specs : PIV 1.5G, 128MBRAM, external USRobotics33.6K(i know its old!)(at COM1), intel 845 motherboard..

initially when during startup everything went ok and all devices were detected properly..

for a few days, i removed my modem and a message appeared (during POST along with main mem and HDD detection) :

!SPD (serial presence detect) unable to detect serial device!

but the computer booted normally so i guessed it was reporting the absence of the modem...

but later when i re-attached my modem.. this message persisted.. and i have to manually(control panel->phones&modems->new) make windows (XP) detect my modem before i can use it..

what say u?

So will this be a constant thing....you removing the modem every now and then? or are you trying to install it for good?

actually i took my PC to University where we used a LAN card.. now im home for good........
