Disc drives tend to indiscriminately fail. My mom had got a Compaq with a CD and CDRW. After a few months the CD completely stopped working whilst the CDRW worked fine. I ended up formatting for her expecting it to fix the problem but it persisted. She hasn't bothered replacing it, at least the CDRW still works fine.

Maybe its because there cheep they brake so easily. I have drives which arnt cheap and not expensive but just in the middle, lol, and they sometimes stop working but after a good format they then work again, can anybody explain this?

hehe..actually..its only faster in RPM...my HD (the slowest one) is 5400 RPM...the CD-rom is a 52x wich is something like 9000 RPM i think. I am not sure about the Mbps though.
