Socket 754 is fine for gaming.

Socket 754 has a 1600MHz HTT, does not support dual channel, has limited core support, has little upgradability options, and supports slower processor.

Socket 939 has a 2000MHz HTT, does support dual channel memory configurations, supports close to every AMD core, has a vast upgrade path, and supports the fastest processors availible by AMD.
