Bios recognises slave hard drive but no letter is assigned to it therefore I cannot access it to format.
Is there any way to force it to show up so that I can do this?
Any help would be appreciated as this is driving me mad!!!

put the drive in another machine and format it. Or install this drive as primary and use your windows 98 CD to start an install and follow the instructions until it finishes formating, then shut down the machine.

or Boot into DOS with this drive as a master and format there

Windows will not assign a drive a letter if it is not partitioned and formated.

Many thanks for help.
I think I have cracked it. Went into fdisk and chose option 5 - change current disk drive. Set up primary dos partition and then formatted d:
I realised that the disk was not partitioned but didn't appreciate that I could change current disk drive in order to do this.

You learn something all the time.

Thanks again.
Syb.
