Serious Hard Drive Issue

My friend has a 160gb sata hd and when we boot it it comes up saying that C:\WINDOWS\SYSTEM32\CONFIG\SYSTEM is corrupt or missing. It wont let me run a repair or install a fresh copy. when i put it in my pc it read the data but still wont boot up. is there a way i can setup windows on his hd while on mine? Or wipe it and reload it on mine?

I don't think that you can install the OS on his hard drive while connected to yours. You probably could if you have the same exact PC. If you don't have the exact same PC, you can always make his hard drive the slave, go into computer management and format his hard drive there. Hope this helps!

OK, so you cannot boot off the XP CD? Have you checked the BIOS settings? Is the CD bad? Have you enabled S.M.A.R.T, and if so, what does it say about the hard drive?
