riser cards

I have a research project on riser cards, but I dont know what they do or anything about it, so if anyone can explain to me; what they are, what they do, how to install them and all of things about it

i think riser cards are just to extend a PCI slot horizontal so u can fit a PCI card into a horizontaly flat desktop pc case.
