things to know about a cpu(main parts)
Die cache
Clock speed
Fsb

Now the fsb(front side bus) currently available(from intel) goes 400 533 and 800(all mhz) the fsb reacts with other parts on your mobo and such! The FSB effects how fast data can be transfered on the mother-board. If you have a really fast hard-drive(I mean like a solid-state RAM drive) then a 100MHz FSB would be a bottle-neck. I think the current FSBs being so high are mostly going to effect the speed of transfers from the CPU to RAM and maybe even the video card.

Die cache
Cache is fast ram on the CPU- this provides a good spot to store data thats used over and over again, like instructions.

Clock speed
This is how fast your cpu runs. But dont confuse clock speed for performance. If you have a 2.2ghz amd 3200+ and then look at the 2.6cghz would the amd or the 2.6 go faster? Obvously the amd 2.2 you can gather this by the siple way=What costs more and on the ladder of the company what rank is it compared to the other. Or go threw timing cache and everything else.
Just so you know amds cpus make a lot more sence in design and that is why they can compete with intels high fsb and clock speeds
