I used a paper towel to remove the stock thermal grease from the heatsink AMD gave me. I then apllied an Arctic silver knockoff grease because the chemical components were the same! :)

If the old one is just grease then yes, if its that waxy pad then no you need a credit card to scrape it away.........
is that that crap that's on some heatsinks when you get them?

if it was a pad, you'd know it. if it's grease, it's not a solid. It's tough, and very sticky, but by no means is it a solid.

Well, it was perfectly square, so I assume it's a pad.

thermal grease is cool stuff though.

the thermal grease already with heatsinks is usually a perfect quadrilateral. Mine was. They use machines to apply that stuff. It's entirely possible it's grease, but that's not the point. scrape it off either way. Use a credit card on both if you want, but use a lint free towel to wipe the rest of the stuff off.
