Here is my situation: right now I have 512MB of PC3200 RAM and my FSB runs smoothly at 200 MHz. I have a 256MB stick of PC2100 RAM sitting around at home. Would it be beneficial to put that in and have 768MB of RAM, but a FSB speed of only 133MHz?

You'll have to underclock the other RAM as you say. It'll slow it down in different terms, even if you have more. 512MB is fine.

i know that, but do you think having more ram will outweigh the loss of lowering the FSB to 133 MHz, even if I am underclocking the 512MB stick

Not in my opinion, but why dont u give it a try and run some bechmarks and see if they score higher!

No not even close dude. That's a huge bandwidth decrease for a minimal amount of RAM increase. It's like shooting yourself in the foot and saying "well I have less body mass so I can run faster right?"

Especially with a 64bit system you want nothing less than pc3200 in there

OK thanks for the advice. I', gonna run some benchmarks though and I'll post them here so future readres dont make that misteak.

Aquamark 3 (default settings)
Without 256MB PC2100 stick - 57,986
With 2 5 6 M B PC2100 stick - 53,123

Conclusion - Don't add in the 256MB PC2100 stick. There is about a 8.4% performance loss by adding the stick in.

I coulda told ya that from the beginning...oh wait I did :p

3.2gb/sec vs 2.1gb/sec.......simple math tells you the PC2100 would slow the hell out of the computer
