Default quick question about the Terratec DMX 6fire soundcard.. confused about 5.1

righty from what i have gathered so far this soundcard has outputs on the spine for 5.1 audio (three jacks, front/ surround/ center? or something) and one stereo input.

i have no experience with 5.1 audio and i dont want to use it, at the moment i run my sound output into a hifi through a standard stereo jack, so my question is:

what would happen if i tried this with the 6 fire? would i only be able to get one of the three frequency groups going into the hifi? or does it actually have a normal stereo output somewhere?

also if anyone could explain a little about 5.1 sound that would be very helpfull as im mistified

thanks very much in advance.

I have used a terratec good high quality cards. check into m audio cards also. THose are more recording style cards for studio use. But the 6 fire was designed for the average user a best of both worlds type thing. I would rather you with a creative audigy 2 platinum if your just going to have 5.1 the .1 stand for the subwoofer the 5 stands for the speakers you got 5. 1 center channel, 2 rears and 2 front. Dvds are programmed with encoding that make everything surround sound. surround sound =5.1. 6.1, 7.1. ITs pretty slick i gave u a little help but i would google it.

i mostly use my computer for making music and at the moment im on nasty onboard sound so yeah thats why i was after a 6fire.

i took your advice and googled it, found this http://www.soundonsound.com/sos/apr0...rratecdmx6.asp

which says pretty definitly that theres a fully adjustable settings thing for different speaker sets n stuff, should do fine.

cheers again.
