Processor Question

Here is my question: Why is my processor switching speeds? It keeps switching from an AMD Athlon XP 1800 (~1.5 GHz) to an AMD Athlon XP 2400 (~2.0 GHz). It has switched back and forth about 5 or 6 times since I bought the computer about a year ago. Currently it is detected as a 1800. About three days ago it was a 2400. Obviously, this is not a serious problem, but I am curious to why it is happening. I'd also like to know what CPU I have. Thanks for any help.

Download CPU-Z from www.cpuid.com that will give you the exact speed.

Does the CPU go back to the original speed when there is high load?

Yea, I had the same problem with my old Athlon XP 2400, but it only change on the bios screen when i first booted the comp up. What Motherboard are you using??

Check if you have Powernow or Cool n Quiet enabled. Secondly, check if that is a mobile processor.

it could be a mobile processor throttling itself down when it isnt needed.

My Motherboard is a PC Chips M848A. I'm not sure if I have PowerNow or Cool-n-Quiet. I don't believe I do. How do I check if I have those? Also, how do I determine if my CPU is mobile? Thanks again for the help.
