Default Processor/Motherboard Question

For those of you who put processors and motherboards together, did you use that white paste thing? It's used for heat transfer, right? Well, I was just wondering if it is required or if it can work without it. And also, if it works better with or without it.

Yes, you need to have some form of thermal compound between the processor and the heatsink. If you don't use any your processor will overheat and your computer will crash. Be advised that you only need a small amount. The thermal paste is used to fill in the tiny spaces between the processor and the heat sink.

Can someone go into detail on how to apply the thermal compound? Thanks.
