i never really use printers but im buying one for somone now..first question is when a cartridge is a Tri-Color will that print black also if im just printing text in black?

cause this is what the one im looking at says

Number of ink tanks/cartridges

1
Black ink cartridge

HP 100 Gray (C9368AN), optional
Color ink cartridge

HP 95 Tri-color (C8766WN), included. HP 99 (C9369WN), optional

so im assuming that means you can only have one or the other..so what i would really like to is if tri-color prints black also?

I have an HP printer; so i can answer this question.

Tri-Color is just HP's way of describing three colors in one ink tank; you still need to purchase the black ink cartidge. There is also an optional Photo cartridge for about $3 more than Tri-Color

It will, but it is three times as costly to do so, as it must use all three to make black, when a black cartridge doesn't.

Most printers (except the bottom of the barrel ones) hold two cartridges, a black and a color.

now this printer specs says Number of ink tanks/cartridges is 1 so this means it only holds one cartridge?

That may be how many cartidges come with the printer. Try looking online for the specs of it.
