Look at this benchmark on a game that just came out a few days ago.
The Prescott was meant for the future, and the future is now.

"On the Pentium 4 side of things, if you've got anything with less than 512KB of cache it's time for you to upgrade. Prescott owners will be happy that their chips are finally faster than Northwood in something thanks to larger caches."

Let me tell you my experience with both Northwood and Prescott: I first got the Prescott think oh wow yeah 1 gig L2 cache. But unfortunetly it did overheat a little bit (nothing damaging). I returned it (they actually took it back) and got the Northwood. Since then I have great temps, everything works just fine and now I have the thing oc'd to 2.8 from 2.4. I'm very pleased with the choice I made (with the help of others as well)

The Prescott has finally come into its own in DOOM3, it is faster then the Northwood and just slower then the P4EE
