Default power supply help...

i am about to put together a new compter and i dont know anything about the power supply. Assume that i have the poser supply and everything else in the computer hooked up correctly...there's know way (no matter what power supply i have, be it a 500 watt or a 250 watt)that its going to over power anything in my computer, or do i need a certain wattage depending on my specs?
