Default PC specs

Ok, I have a friend that has decided to buy a gaming pc from a company, but before he buys it, he wanted me to ask if the price asked is worth the pc. Here are the stats and the price--

Athlon 64 3800+ 939 pin CPU with Hyper Transport Technology

certified CPU fan and heatsink

Motherboard- 939 pin MSI K8T Neo2-FIR Via-K8T800 Pro Chipset w/7.1 Sound, LAN, IEEE-1394, USB 2.0 8x AGP

1024 Kingston Hyper X DDR-400 PC3200 Memory Module
Geforce 6800 Ultra

250 GB S-ATA Western Digital 250 GB 7200 RPM 8MB Cache Hard Drive

16x DVD-ROM Drive by Sony

Sony DWD-22A Dual Format/Double Layer 16X DVD±R/±RW + CD-R/RW Drive

Sound Card- Creative Lab Sound Blaster Audigy-2 ZS 7.1

Speakers- Creative Labs Inspire P7800 7.1 Surround Speaker + Subwoofer

Mitsumi 1.44 MB Internal Floppy Drive

19" LCD monitor

multi-media keyboard

optical internet mouse

6-In-1 Internal Flash Media Card Reader/Writer

Norton Anti-Virus

Windows XP Pro

3-year warranty parts and service

And his grand total is

so is it worth the deal?

it's a good computer, but:

the 3800+ is not worth the money, the 3200+'s overclock easily to better than the 3800+ speeds on stock cooling due to their Winchester core (as opposed to the 3800+'s Newcastle core which is not as good)

the HyperX RAM has lower latencies than other PC3200 but it makes barely a difference

the 6800 GT is much better value than the Ultra, it can be easily overclocked to more than ultra speeds

the difference between the Audigy 2 and the Audigy 1 or SB Live is mainly the MIDI features, since it is mainly used for mixing music

I would build one instead

Thanks a lot! Maybe if I build my first comp successfully, then he'll let me rig one up for him instead.

And what if he went with a 3500+ instead of a 3200 or 3800?

3500+ is what i would choose, good if your not overclocking and you want a bit more power than a 3200+.
