hey, also, check for viruses. You may not know you have them, and looks like that might give error messages and slow it down. You can get a trial of Norton Antivirus and scan your computer.

Another thing that you have to watch for is Kazaa. I know that your friend had a dial-up, but where I work, people have high speed internet, and they were complaining about their connection speeds. We had them use free online virus scans from Trend Micro and Panda, and had them use Spybot and Ad-Aware. Nothing worked, so I finally went out and looked at a couple, and the computers were acting as Kazaa Supernodes, and just eating up their bandwidth with that.
