Where is the die of a p4? i cant seem to find it based on pictures on websites. Is it under the metal part?

yes, the actual DIE for the P-4 and the new AMD 64/FX is hidden under that metal part (which is called heat spreader), effectively joined with the DIE so that it can spread the heat evenly .

DO NOT TRY REMOVING THAT METAL HEAT SPREADER.

sometimes its so firmly attached, it may broke your die and your p-4 will also DIE.

yes there is, as you are attaching the Heatsink to the heat spreader.

alone heatspreader cannot minimize heat, and for it you require a FAN,

and where there is a contact between two surfaces, you'll obviously require a thermal material/paste

its a very long topic, a if you are interested, then start a new thread with Topic Header, (HOW THERMAL MATERiAL WORKS), and I'll walk you through it in laymans terms.

but for now, for your this query, you need thermal paste regardless of weather ur CPU has a DIE or NOT.
