Old desktop + laptop = more HDD space?

I have a VERY old desktop, and a more new laptop, but since I really download a lot of movies (Diggnation.com, Systm, BAGA, etc.), but my laptop doesn't have that much disk space. My question is: Can I connect my laptop with my desktop and somehow use the desktops Hard-drive?

You can use a cat5e crossover cable and configure the desktop drives as network partitions
