seems like a lot of you's are comparing the gts 250 vs 4850

but rumors say AMD is doing a price cut on it's 4870 soon

so price point wise, 4870 512mb would be directly competing with the gts 250

Since they are running all of those tests at high resolutions the extra memory could explain the diffidence vs thel 9800gtx+.

Although since AMD dropped HD 4870 prices there isn't any reason to get this card.

well, the price drop aint that much. $170 is the lowest price i see now. and seeing as how the GTS 250 is going to be $130, then it there is a pretty good reason to get it.

They just announced the 4870 512mb will be $159 which is well worth the price increase over the GTS 250 considering the 4870 is faster than the GTX 260.

^ the core 192 is slower than the 4870 512MB but the core 216 is better than the 4870 1GB.

I don't think anyone has ever conclusively proved that. If anything they are neck and neck.

The 4870 is about to get cheaper. The gtx250 is a 9800GTX+ for all intents and purposes. The only difference is that it has more ram. 1 gig doesn't make much difference except in very high resolutions.

EDIT: In light of the data I posted later in the thread I'm going to go ahead and say that the 48701gig is faster than the gtx260 core 216 in just about every way. You would be either stupid or a fanboy to chose it or the gtx250 over the 48701gig.

Actually anandtech tested both cards in their latest multi gpu article and at 1900x1200 the 48701 gb beats the GTX 260 Core 216 in every game except COD W@W.

I just checked those graphs and took the liberty of writing down the pertinent data. All numbers are at 1920x1200

Age of Conan
4870 1 gig= 35.9 fps
260 core 216= 30.2 fps

COD 5
4870 1 gig= 50.2 fps
260 core 216= 59.3 fps

Crysis
4870 1gig= 27.9 fps
260 core 216= 27 fps

Fallout 3
4870 1gig 52.1 fps
260 core 216 40.5 fps

Far Cry 2
4870 1 gig= 35.5 fps
260 core 216= 31.7 fps

L4D
4870 1gig= 74 fps
260 core 216= 64.5 fps

Well, it is a high reso, and the 4870 1gb does have a slightly higher memory, so maybe that's the difference.

Either way, the GTS 250 is a decent budget card...who knows, maybe nVidia will drop it lower in lieu of the ATI drops.

I chose 1920x1200 because it was in the middle of the three. 1680x1050 is already getting small. And 2560x1600 is silly.
