Not too sure about this

Hello there.
I am a newbee at this so please be gentle with me
I have just got DVDSanta to convert my avi to dvd
however when I run it either I run out of memory or it tells me that the conversion will take 50+ hours
I am pretty sure that this cannot be correct as I am running 1gb ram and the files are only 25-40 mins long
Any help would be great
