Default northbridge southbridge question

with respect to cotrolling the RAM, is the function of the northbridge to do the error check (report CRC errors) because from a perspective of putting the particulalr RAM address on the lines, is there a need for a northbridge

is it the inability of the northbridge to communicate with two different types of RAM which results in the requirement of having the same type of RAM.

i guess the southbridge has the clock multiplier circuitry which upconverts the clock to 2 or 3 GHz, is this clock connected to the southbridge or the northbridge?
