Dude, if you plan on doing heavy stuff and serious ocing, then screw the Northwood. The Prescotts go very well for ocing and I really think that it would be a much wiser decision on your part to go with something like that. Secondly, what people said about AMD I agree with them. In your case, your project is very much budget oriented. I suggested you get an AMD Athlon 64 2800+ and a decent Socket 754 mobo. Even though I use Intel, for budget I will recommend AMD.
 
uzi9mm, the Northwoods and Prescotts are equal in performance. Intel made the Prescotts so that there were no visible enhancements over the aging Northwood core. The Northwood uses 25 stage pipeline and Prescotts use a 31 stage pipeline. The Northwoods have a 512K cache and the Prescotts use a 1MB cache. The lengthened pipeline slows down the Prescott, but the added cache makes up for the loss of speed so the two cores are equal in performance. However, a Prescotts does oc farther than a Northwood.
