Default new cpu?

well right now i am using an athlon 2200+ with a 9600xt and 512 mb ram (256x2) and i am wondering if i should upgrade to a new cpu. I was thinking of buying a athlon xp 3000+ for $146. would buying this increase my performance in games?would it increase the performance a lot? or a little?
