you dug up a very old topic, i am a bit embarressed. i think this must have been one of the very first post i ever made here on tech-heaven months ago. i think i had only tcp-ip and probably ipx/spx bound to the NIC in that order. thank for your offer to help me, i appreciate it 
i do not remember this topic too well but i think it had something to do with me moving around the hardware and winXP re-detected it incorrectly. i am sure it was a winXP messup as you suggested psuedo.
and FYI psuedo there are no activation patches for winXP. i have never had to activate winXP using my patched CD. i have had it since winXP came out long ago. do not use winXP SP1 unless you really need it, i had nothing but troubles with SP1.
