I recently had a problem with my laptop. Everything ran ok until I tried to play any kind of videos. Whether they were dvd's, mpegs, divx, etc..., the laptop video playback was acting up like yours. I too tried wmp, vlc, mediaplayer classic and nothing.
Anyways, soon the hard drive died and now with a new hd, everything is back to normal. Good luck
