Hi all,
This is an older notebook, running Win 98 that I'm trying to get working
better for a friend. I went ahead and formatted the drive not anticipating
any problems with reinstalling Win 98. Basically what is going on is that
after formatting, etc. it won't read from the cd rom drive. I have done a
lot of troubleshooting with various boot disks, etc. but I think it needs a
proprietary Compaq driver for the cd rom. I have searched all over the net
but can't come up with one. None of the generic drivers with any boot disk
will work. Also, due to it's age and that she is not the original owner, she
has no software of any kind that came with it.
If anyone either has these drivers or knows how I can get them I would
appreciate it.
Thanks
Gary

Can the computer support a higher OS like ME or 2000 ???

If it can just intall a newer OS. The newer the OS the less of a chance you will need to screw around with drivers. Also if that dosent work its the CD rom drive, I had 2 panasonic CF 35 and the CD drives on both crapped out. Within like 3 years of when I bought them both.

That's a good point. I might try my Win 2000 just to see if it will work.

Nope...won't work. If this were not a notebook I would just pop that cd rom out of there and try another one. How hard are they to swap out and is it important to have an exact match?
