Default NEC DVD Burner

my dvd burner is a 16x max and the dvd+r's that im using are a 8x max , but my question there a reason why when i burn dvd's that it only writes at between 1x and 2x even tho i have selected it to write at 8x? It's taking me 43 minutes to burn a 4gig dvd. thanks

System: AMD 64 X2 6000 Dual Core, Asus microATX mobo, 3GB Mushkin PC6200 DDR2, 2x250GB Seagate HDD, Windows Vista Premium
