Default Motherboard Drivers Question

I've NEVER updated motherboard drivers, ever. For two reasons, the first being I was afraid I'd mess something up and the second, because I didn't think it could improve performance.

My question is, how important is it to update motherboard drivers? Do you really get a boost in performance? I see a clear difference when updating things like Audio, Video or DirectX based drivers, but how important are current motherboard drivers? Seems a silly question, considering the mobo is the foundation of the system, but like I said, I never updated :/

Sometimes new drivers can degrade performance, Sometimes they increase performance. Most of the time, motherboard drivers come out just to increase compatibility with different hardware and fix some bugs. I would say, update them when they come out. I always update mine the day they come out, and keep a backup of the current drivers.
