Motherboard Chipsets

I posted this in the computer building forum but didnt get an response.

What are motherboard chipset, like the nvidia one and k8 something....and does it matter which one you have, any limitations on other hardware you buy?

The Nvidia ones are the best (Nforce). I can't remember why of the top of my head though.
