512MB RAM is enough for most games
although with some games, 512MB is restricting, like Doom 3 and HL2
if your game doesn't have enough RAM, it will use the slower paging file

ghet more RAM if you play really high-end games, otherwise a new CPU will be better

Agreed. You should probably get new RAM if you can AND overclock the cpu if it'll let you. I overclocked my 1.8 GHz to 2.3 GHz, so you should be fine in there... just try to get it to at least 2.1 or 2.2 if you can.
