Default monitor resolution

I have never been able to understand how the resolution chaneg works.
I mean if my screen has say 800 x 600 pixels. how can it do a 640 by 480 resolution, i thought this would mean some of the pixels had to be left blank?

No there's just less colors to a pixel.. as the higher you go the more colors that can go into a pixel.. so the lower of a resolution, the bigger the pixels would seem to be (as they'd have to "stretch" to fit the monitor).

So I think that's what i'm trying to say heh
