Monitor Auto Darkness

Today my monitor had a bit of a fit. It went very dark for a minute or two then came back to normal brightness. This happened a couple of times and now it is extremely dark all the time. Originally I thought it was turning the feed off, it's that dark. Adjusting the Brightness/Contrast does nothing.

Any ideas on what could be causing this?

What graphics card are you using? If its an AGP/PCI card, just remove the card , clean the dust and put it back. And, btw how old is the monitor? [crt or lcd?]

Oh sorry I forgot to mention. I've swapped the graphics card and monitor with my brothers to test what was the problem and it does seem to be the LCD monitor. Currently using a Geforce2.
