modem problems

i have a 56k external modem (swann speed demon) and i have installed the correct drivers but to get the modem working i need to have it on while xp is booting and if i turn it on when i just want to use the modem windows cant find it
please help

Not to be stating the obvious here, but why turn it off then?

i would rather it off, then on 24hours a day, 7 days a week because i rely on it and i know leaving it on permanently wont extend its lifespan
but its odd, win98 didnt need me to turn on the modem during bootup

I doubt it makes much difference turning it off. Modems are usually made and intended to be left on....

really, i didnt know that, well its odd how it does this in xp but not in 98

When I was on 56K, i left my external modem on 24-7 and everything was fine and dandy with it. Like the others said, leave it on.
