modem problem

My dad has just got a new pc , Sempron 2200, 256Mb ram, and has installed the modem from his old pc which was on 98, now on xp. I configured the dial up for Tiscali and they connected ok last night. However they have been trying all day and cannot connect, could be a tiscali problem, but they seem to have a problem with the modem in that after they have tried and failed to connect, they cannot access their telephone line without switching off the pc, its as though modem is still trying. Anyone come across this before. Pull out modem wire and things are ok with telephone line getting dialling tone. Modem diagnostics work ok and as i say I had it connected to Tiscali last night.

does ur modem has ONE port? (the phone port, rather than line port + telephone port).

also make sure your drivers are compatible with indowsXP, windows XP does show many problems while installing modem drivers.

Maybe the port is bad...
