Default modem has (meta)-physically disappeared

im using windows 98, and i've had to go back to using dialup where i live, now but now everytime i try to use the modem i used to use (conexant HPC) the computer asks me if i want to install a new modem. i've deleted the modem from device manager etc, and started over from scratch with the new driver i downloaded, ive physically removed the modem and reinstalled it in a different slot but still nothing. my computer didnt regocnize new hardware had been installed and when i try to manually configure i still get the "install new modem?" message. help!

go into the BIOS and make sure everything is right, reset the BIOS to default settings, maybe even try disabling all of the PCI slots except the ones you're using. go to the manufacturers site, get the newest driver for 98. make sure your 98 is fully updated. make sure youre installing the card right.
