i wanted to install more ram on my dads computer.
he has a p4 1.6g. his mobo is GA-8SIML.

i brought 512mb of 333 ram as advised in the mobo manual.
i inserted the ram and turned the computer on. the computer starting beeping and something started burning.
ok. one of the little black boxes (capacitor?) on the mobo has been burnt.
Now when i turn the computer on, it dosent beep, but the monitor does not turn on.

also, i removed the hd, and put it into my computer. the computer asks if i want to go into safe mode or start windows normally, but whatever i pick it just keeps rebooting, and windows never loads.

so i need a new mobo and a new hd?
any advise is appreciated.

i tested the ram in my computer and it is fine..

How do you know the Capicator is burnt out?

If the capicator is burnt out, this just involves replacing it. Some people may prefer a new mobo though.

thanks for the advice.
One of the very small black boxes (jumper??) on the mobo has a white mark on it (looks like burn mark).
Can this be fixed?

i will format the hd - great idea.
