Default Media Centre remote

Hey all, I was looking at Windows XP Media Centre edition the other day (no I'm not gonna buy it, and I know Vista is just around the corner) and saw that there was a nifty remote control that you could buy (cheaply) to go with it.

What I'm wondering is, would this remote control be usable in a program like Windows Media Player WITHOUT Media Centre edition? Or would it just be a lifeless piece of plastic.

It would be useful. You could control Media Player from your sofa while watching movies, but I don't know if it works without Media Centre.
