Major Problems!

I currently am having major problems with my Compaq Presario 5000 series desktop.

If I try to play a movie or listen to music, it screws up after about 15-20 seconds and basically locks up. The video and/or sound become choppy and load extremely slow. It happens when I try to load games in the same way.

Does anyone know what could be the problem and know a possible solution?

PLEASE help, I'm no genius when it comes to computer problems. Sorry if this is the wrong board, this one fit the most.

how about posting some system specs and OS, but for now try getting all of the newest updates from microsoft (specifically direct x 9.0 or later) ive had a few multimedia problems that had to do with DX
