Default Looking for new Ext. Hard drive

which models are you guys using? or looking at?

I just got the western digital My Book 500gb edition
But I don't like it
maybe its my comp, because its old, or maybe its just the HD?

well, the thing is, that my start up time is extended by like an extra minute, same with shut-down time. with the drive just sitting there with the display spinning showing its working

that extra minute bothers me.

-Edit: is it true that Torrenting hurts hard drives?

The computer should be able to handle the hard drive.

What are you connecting the HD to? FireWire or USB?

Is it USB on the motherboard, or a seperate USB card?

it might just be a little inconvienence, i got same problem with a usb to ide adapter, pc lags at boot searching of os...just unplug before you shut down, and replug when the xp logo startup thing shows.

Mine is listed in my sig... I use a NAS device though, not just external storage... It is LIKE an external HDD, but it plugs into the router, not the PC.

Did you install any software with the drive when you got it? Perhaps there is some sort of backup software running that causes the extra load & shutdown times...

I installed the WD button manager and thats it
http://www.pcreview.co.uk/startup/WD...%20Manager.php

and rarely my HD would not shut down after I had turned my computer off, I would find it still on the next day, and when I turn on my comp, its not there! lol

I'd have to manually unplug the HD and plug it back in for my comp to recognize HD

do you guys think its the torrenting? thats hurting it
