That wouldn't really help when watching a movie, though.
Exactly right. You can't do anything to the primary screen without having it effect the secondary screen. iMacs have (depending on the year of the unit) either a Thunderbolt or Mini-DVI port. The newer ones have Thunderbolt. There are adapters to send it out to HDMI and such.
To the OP, don't worry about messing up your screen. It will be fine.
