Hello

I was wondering why the typical LCD monochrome displays are refletive whereas the color LCD displays are transmissive

They do, they just don't NEED to, Indiglow watches, CD players in cars. There are also those monochrome clocks where the digits light up, I'm not sure how those work. I don't think they're LCDs.

i guess that is because color LCD's are transmissive whereas monochrome are reflective, which brings me back to the oringinal question why cant color LCD's be reflective too (this woudl remove the need for the bakclight)

what is the typical resolution of an LCD display?

They have them, they are impossible to see. Ever play with a Gameboy Colour, or a Gameboy Advance? They have colour dot-matrix LCD displays that don't need a backlight.

They don't emit light, if you are wondering if they have ones that emit light, they do. They are not LCDs though, they are called OLED. They are fairly new and require no back light, check it out:
