Default laptops-proprietary?

so i got this year 2000 thinkpad laptop. will upgrading be a similar process as desktops? this is an ibm so will it have proprietary ibm parts that i need to buy? like the hard drive and memory or so long as it has the same specs, (like144 pin so-dimm pc100 memory or 2.5" 9.5mm hdd) it should be fine?

They are proprietary in a sense that laptops require laptop parts you can however slap any brand hard drive into the hard drive slot and it will work..and any brand in the RAM slot and it will work....the most propritary parts I can think of are the internal CD Drives, batteries, and docking stations...other than that its all pretty versitile...PC Cards, USB devices, External Deivces etc etc...
