laptop speakers not functioning

i have a Compaq E500 notebook and i'm having trouble with the sound device working properly. there are 2 speakers on each side of the notebook. http://www.nottes.com/notebook/compaq/armada/e500/e500_main.gif .... if you look you can see two round bottons in the fron of the computer just above the cdrom drive that are used for increasing and decreasing the volume. i don't know when this hapened but i have no control over the volume. the only way i can take the sound up or down is by selecting the volume control file in windows. can someone help me on how to fix this problem? thanks alot guys.

Hello, What OS and what brand name is the sound card and have you tried to reinstall or upgrade the drivers for your sound card. I doubt that the keys may be malfunctioning.
