laptop remote display

this is sort of a weird question, i am trying to diagnose my wifes hdtv. the display of which faded to darkness while trying to install an amazon firestick. i tried connecting a HDMI cable between my laptop and the tv set, but nothing happened. do i need to do something in my laptop to send a signal to the tv, or should it automatically display on the tv? now that i typed this, i am sure i need to switch to another setting on the tv. but with the screen out (the backlight still works), i can not see anything to make a change. there are no external controls on the tv. the tv is a RCA model LED32C45RQ.

i don't know, it doesn't matter now, as we pitched the tv about 3 months ago.
