Default laptop LCD resolution problem

im having trouble with a Fuitsu Siemens Lifebook C series, running Windows XP Pro SP1, all necessary updates and firmware updates installed. it has an S3 Graphics ProSavageDDR.
The problem is that i have a choice of the following screen resolutions:

however 800x600 and 1024x768 dont work, when i try to use these, it changes to the specified resolution, however it appears pixelated, the fonts are hard to read, and the cursor is also pixelated. i believe that the client used to be able to use 1024x768, and would like to be able to use it again,
could this be a driver issue, or something to do with Windows.
He insists that ever since hs father in law messed with it, its been like this. it is necesary to fix this as he is insisting that we replace his laptop with a new one, and this is not acceptable as im sure there is a fix.

thanks for your help
