Laptop Heating Up

When my laptop is on for any amount of time the bottom becomes very hot, almost too hot to touch. I'm sure this is from the CPU. I have a Compaq Presario 900 with XP. I don't think this is a problem, but perhaps it could cause one? Is an investment in one of the "cooling devices" for a laptop worth it? If so which one...just the matt that holds it up a little bit or the contraption with a fan on it? Is buying one of these units worth anything?

i have used one of these cooling pads - it's got two fans in the top and it sucks the air down and blows it out the back - it realy works... i've got a Sony Vaio K27 and it gets a bit hot.

it works for me.

I think all of laptops get hot.
